Too many Wine Fairs?

This past weekend was the 19th edition of the fair in Düsseldorf, featuring 4,783 exhibitors from 48 countries, almost 500 more than last year. In particular, the New World presence continues to grow. Among the 44,000 visitors, up ten percent from the 40,000 in 2012, 40% were apparently foreigners. That doesn't exactly rhyme with what I saw in the isles, but the organisers insist on the differenciating advantage of Prowein as an international fair. Both VinItaly in Verona and VinExpo in Bordeaux are - by comparison - navel tweets, destined either for the domestic market or to tweak the egos of local producers. Of the world's too many wine fairs, this is nonetheless one of the finest... Comments
