Buying Wine in Shanghai
 June 1st 2013 23.12

Click For Large ViewOn my last day in Shanghai, I had the opportunity to visit both ASC's fabulous new Wine Residence and Summergate's Pudao, which means grape. Each is meant to provide consumers a better understand of the wines they import, with at each outlet a large selection of wines by the glass from Enomatic dispensers. Marcus Ford, pictured here, is the head of Pudao, which with shops both here and in Beijing, also carries a wide selection of wines beyond the Summergate portfolio. Long a fixture at the M on the Bund, he has settled into his new role with considerable aplomb. If only the Chinese would now lower their import duties to nil like they have done in Hong Kong, instead of threatening to impose retaliatory custom's measures, buying wine here would be a song.
