Click For Large ViewI have just done a tasting from Delicato at a little bar behind the Opera in Saigon named Alibi. Ryan Stewart was there to show their wines. I was surprised to hear that this 'little' family owned business - they moved to the Bay Area from Sicily three generations ago - now produces thirteen million cases a year. Let that melt on your tongue! With that volume, they are one of the five largest players in the States. Although not so enamoured by the Chardonnay, Zinfandel or Cabernet Sauvignon, I quite liked their 2009 Gnarly Head Pinot Grigio and a 2008 Pinot Noir from Monterey, where they own 20,000 hectares of vineyard. It is not all planted yet, but that is more than the Mosel, Rheingau and Nahe combined - and is only part of their holdings. Things there travel to the beat of a different drum…and as here the marketing matches that of Johnny Walker.Comments
