Providence again brought me to the 'Duck de Chine' in 1949 last night , this time with Yi Wang, a Chinese wine collector with keen insight, a deep understanding of what is happening in his country and a charming smile. After searching through his vast collection at home, we chose a bottle of 2001 Mazoyères Chambertin from Taupenot Maume that he then brought along to - after Bollinger and Krug - wash down the pomp, duck and circumstance. I was initially enamoured by the 2002s, and thought then that they were much better than the 2001s, but have since come to see the beauty of 2001. The tannins may be a touch angular, but many are drinking much better today that their younger counterparts. Yi Wang believes that in ten years the 2002s will again have the upper hand.
